It isn’t every day that Bloomington, Indiana, hosts a book signing. Our city boasts a rich artistic community fueled by longtime residents and Indiana University students—even a writer’s guild of our own—but compared to the literary scenes of Indianapolis, Louisville, and Chicago, we’re still small.

That’s why it was such a thrill for me, as a small press publisher, to attend a recent signing for Andrew D.H. Moore’s debut steampunk science-fantasy novel, Children of Solo. Moore spoke to a full room, sharing his expertise on the nuts and bolts philosophy of Steampunk and why he believes character-driven narrative improves the Fantasy genre.

Children of Solo: An Award-Nominated Steampunk Fantasy

Moore’s novel has already made waves. Children of Solo was long-listed for the Chanticleer International Book Awards, placing in the Top 50 Fantasy Books and Top 40 Fiction Cover Designs.

I first met Moore through a mutual friend here in Bloomington (shoutout to TechOn BTown, the best electronics repair shop in town). Though Moore now lives in Colorado, he was born and raised right here. That local connection made it even more exciting to interview him on my YouTube channel and dive into his debut novel.

And I loved it. This chunky, character-driven space fantasy instantly transported me back to my Spelljammer days. It also just so happened to perfectly fill a gap in The Arcanist’s upcoming novel lineup.

Support Indie Publishing on Kickstarter

Working with talented authors like Andrew D.H. Moore is my passion — but indie publishing only survives with the support of readers like you.

That’s why we’re launching our very first Kickstarter campaign. Backing this project is the first step toward helping us fund the incredible books we have in the works.
